Five Prohibitions

In addition to the prohibition of work, as on the Sabbath, there are five activities specifically prohibited on Yom Kippur:

  • eating and drinking,
  • anointing oneself with perfumes or lotions,
  • marital relations,
  • washing (for pleasure), and
  • wearing leather shoes.
